What is a CT Scan?
A CT examination creates a set of images of thin layers of the body. These axial layers, or “cuts” are useful in themselves, and allow the detailed visualisation of 2d “slices” through the body, but the orientation of the image is defined entirely by the position of the patient in the scanner.
Once acquired, this image data can be reformatted to allow viewing in different orientations, for a variety of different purposes. Generally, the data is used for viewing alone, planning surgery with, e.g. implant planning software, or the production of models.
Our Scanner
We are the first Imaging service in London to use the latest generation i-CAT Cone Beam CT Scanner. This offers high resolution images of the skull, with a reduced radiation dose, at high speed. This is achieved using an innovative large area solid state sensor to directly acquire the Data.
Unlike traditional CT scanners the I-CAT examination is carried out in an upright position rather than lying down, and the patient is unobstructed making the experience less intimidating for the anxious patient.
Arranging a Scan
Most of our examinations are carried out on a walk-in basis, although booking is always helpful.
Expect your patient to be on the premises for 30 minutes or so. They will be asked to remove any metal-containing jewellery or prostheses which may effect the imaging.
Ideally, when planning for dental implant surgery, a stent should be provided. Our staff understand the use and importance of such radiographic guides, and this will help them to give you the best possible results. Please always ensure that the stent has been tried in the mouth prior to the scan appointment.
The Examination takes place in our dedicated imaging / acquisition suite, which is situated on the ground floor in NRPB approved premises.
Reporting
Reporting by a Specialist Dental Raiologist is available upon request.
